Cavco Homes on the National Mall for HUD Innovative Housing Showcase

June 10th, 2019

Innovative Housing Showcase

For five days, June 1-5, 2019, Cavco Homes proudly displayed a beautiful home on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., as part of the Innovative Housing Showcase 2019.  This innovative Housing Showcase was co-hosted by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) with HUD Secretary Ben Carson to promote affordable, durable housing options.

“Cavco is pleased to present at the Innovative Housing Showcase one of the thousands of high quality, yet truly affordable homes we build each year. Our homes comply with the federal building code administered by HUD and are efficiently constructed with prime building materials to provide energy efficiency and long life,” said Bill Boor, President of Cavco Industries, Inc.

For this event, Cavco partnered with UMH Properties, Inc., a public equity Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) that owns and operates a portfolio of 118 manufactured home communities, to feature a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 1,080 square foot single section home built by Fleetwood Homes of Rocky Mount, Virginia.

For the first two days of the event, the homes were open to invited dignitaries, guests, as well as members of the industry and the media.   For the remainder of the event, the homes were open to the public and thousands lined up daily to tour the manufactured homes.  This was a great opportunity for the public at large to view manufactured homes and see first-hand these beautiful, durable and affordable homes.  Representatives from the home builders, mortgage companies and other housing organizations were also on hand to answer questions.

On the first day of the Innovative Housing Showcase 2019, HUD Secretary Ben Carson toured the display homes on the National Mall and spoke to the media and guests regarding the need for innovative thinking and technology to work together to help solve the growing need for affordable housing.

Day two featured panels of state and local leaders, including Cavco’s own Joe Stegmayer, who discussed ways to use innovative technologies to encourage more affordable housing in local communities.

On the third day, officials from across the federal government shared and discussed innovations that create more affordable housing currently and in the future.  On day four, representatives of Congressional leadership on both sides of the aisle spoke regarding the need for more affordable housing. This is not a political struggle.  It is an issue that everyone must work together to solve for the benefit of all Americans.  Click here to watch some of their comments.

With rising costs driving many Americans away from their dream of home ownership and contributing to the rising homeless population, this Innovative Housing Showcase was an important event for Cavco to participate in to help raise awareness of manufactured homes as an affordable part of the solution.
